Moon Mission Filfy Postcard set is here

I put together a set of four (4) postcards for Moon Mission Filfy and they have all finally arrived. I used OvernightPrints.com, and am pretty happy with the results. The PickleMan with Tentacle I purposefully order with out the Gloss finish. WOW. huge mistake. Its very lifeless and dull compared to the others, that seem to exude a vibrancy that makes my eyes smile.

OvernightPrints is running a promo for 500 4×6 one sided postcards for 20 bucks. Pretty nice deal. Four day shipping was only 34 bucks for everything. We used that for a work thing and the cards actually came two days later! If you use them, double or triple check to make sure you choose GLOSS finish! You’ll be glad you did.

Hope to see you there.

Happy Birthday

September 24th is my mom’s birthday. It also happens to be her husbands, my stepdad’s birthday. weird right? Even more strange is the fact my Grandfather wanted to inter my mother’s remains on September 25th. Why? Im not sure. Close to her birthday? I’m assuming thats why.

I didn’t return for the internment, it is just really horrible to have to have a second funeral for her. The more one dwells on these things the worse they become. I thought it was really unfair for my stepdad but perhaps it forced him to be around people on his birthday. Otherwise he would’ve been squirreled away up on their 80 acres in Minnesota.

This is depressing.

Tablet Pens and legginess

I accidentally washed my Wacom tablet pen on Sunday. That really sucked. I have it sitting in a bag of rice, this is supposed to help pull the moisture out of the device (or other electronic devices like cell phones). It picked up briefly and I was hopeful it was working again but it seems the pressure sensitivity is gone and the eraser end in non-functional. That is not good, hopefully more time in the rice will make it better? I have a Bamboo back up, I bought it for work, so I’ll bring it home tonight and try it out.

Since the computer was out for drawing, I busted out some Bristol board and started laying out my painting, Just putting in figures and doing a simple light line inking so I can copy and work up a value scales, and get final positioning and composition correct.

I did get two more postcards done. The Evil Pickleman, Lord Gurken, Filfy Solo and the group shot are all done and could be uploaded for printing, I’ll look at that tonight.

Also, legs felt crappy the last couple days, was it too much food, beer, sugar, caffeine? I dont know, but Im looking forward to when it stops being a distraction.

Work habits and Vygotsky

Im terrible. I have a real and bizarre affectation of work habitude. I set these weird goals for myself to do X amount of work, on different stuff, random things, Camp Freedom Logos, CD covers, Websites, toys, paintings and they all seem to enjoy simmering in my brain rather than be actually expressed. Thinking of doing vs. actual doing. Is it that just sitting down and going through the motions of work artificially, somehow becomes actual work? Do people notice the difference between heartless automaton constructed work and passion fueled genius? I am starting to doubt that anyone can, or perhaps the latter is far more uncommon than I previously believed.

Also, thinking a lot about apprenticeship vs. class based instruction. Inquiry vs. passive education models. Vygotsky  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lev_Vygotsky and such. Anyone down with Vygotsky? He is the current topic of conversation around the DeFwis household.

Description:

A Moon Mission Filfy Media Kit consisting of a website, packaging, figurines and animation with supporting print materials.

Purpose and Insights:

The Moon Mission Filfy Media Kit will be used for promoting and educating consumers and industry members about MMF.

Research:

MMF takes a lot of its inspiration from classic pulp art and radio/tv serials of the 1930’s and 40’s such as Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. The truth held within these cultural artifacts and how they have aged is one of the main basis upon which MMF is founded. I examine how when we look back on how pop culture looked imaginatively forward we can create something new and imaginative with romantic underpinnings to a retro-future that passed us by.
Print references include: Startling Stories, Super Science Stories, Planet Stories, Galaxy Science Fiction, Adventure, Future, Other Wolds Science Fiction, Fantastic Adventures, Retro Stud by Chapman, Ray Gun by Metcalf & Maresca, Pulp Culture by Robinson & Davidson, The Pinball Compendium ‘30s -‘60s by Shalhoub, Blast Off! Robots, Ray Guns, and Rarities from the Golden Age of Space Toys,  Ad Boy: Vintage Advertising with Character by Dotz, and others.

AFOG

From my father in law John DeFrain PhD.

As we say in family studies, there are two great secrets in the 21st century: 1) that everyone suffers, and 2) that suffering can be a catalyst for growth.

And as Kay King’s wife Cel said a few weeks before she died of breast cancer at age 66: “Well, Kay, this looks like another AFOG to me.”

Kay responded, “Cel, what’s an AFOG?”

“Another Fucking Opportunity for Growth.”
